I'm Stuart Shepard. This is Stoplight!

Okay, this one's a little different, so just hang in there with me, okay?

A couple nights ago we were buying groceries at this Wal-Mart.

We to Wal-Mart more often than Target this time of year because they allow the Salvation Army Bell Ringers out front

And we like that.

Anyways, the checkout lines were long and we settled into one, but pretty soon we realized

we were in the slowest checkout line in the history of the universe.

And we obviously weren't the first people with a two-year old to get stuck in that particular line

because half of battery powered board books in the rack next to us no longer lit their lights

or played 'Silent Night' at the proper speed.

I was starting to get impatient but then I realized the lady who was causing the holdup,

who was slowly lifting her groceries from the cart to the conveyor was probably someone

who deserved a little patience -- a little grace.

After each slow motion placement of an item to be scanned, she would pause and look at the total.

My lovely and talented red-haired wife who on Star Trek would play the empath leaned over and whispered..

"She's making sure she doesn't buy more groceries

Than she has money to pay for."

Sure enough the lady finally asked the clerk to set aside the last of her groceries and

they she very carefully counted out a little stack of twenties.

My wife and I exchanged a glance -- maybe we can offer to pay for the rest of the groceries

but we knew that might embarrass her.

When we finally got to the front of the line my wife grabbed a gift-card and put twenty dollars on it and said

"I'm going to go find her in the parking lot."

And in the dark as snow was falling, she walked from one end of this gigantic parking lot to the other.

But she never found the lady she was looking for. We still have the gift card.

So here's what you can do to help us out. The next time you're in Wal-Mart

Would you pick up a gift card for twenty dollars and if you see that lady, would you give it to her??

She may be short or tall. She may be heavy or thin. She may have straggly Blonde hair

or Red or Brown. She may be White or Black or Hispanic or Asian, but you'll know her

when you see her. You'll know...
