Hey! Come on in.

Hello! Welcome.

Im so glad youre here.

Only, Im not quite ready.

Well after all, the angels havent sung yet.

But Ive got an idea.

Why dont you come in, Ill get the decorations out, and well sing the holidays in.

Welcome to my home.

2020. Okay, not our favorite year.

But folks, we are not going to let 2020 take away our holidays.

Tonight, we at Angel City Chorale are here to create a joyous atmosphere

that we hope will inspire your spirit for the season.

We've been working like elves for months to put together tonight's show.

And though separate and safe, we have sung and filmed new virtual videos to share.

Plus were gonna spice up the night with some of our best-loved moments from concerts past.

Looks like I have some assembling to do here,

so let's get started unraveling this season for you

like I'm doing with this string of lights.

And as I shape up these decorations,

let's begin with an American Shape Note classic.

Hail the blessd morn, see the great Mediator down from the regions of glory descend!

Shepherds go worship the babe in the manger, lo, for his guard the bright angels attend.

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,

dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid.

Star in the East, the horizon adorning,

guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Cold on his cradle the dew drops are shining,

lo lies his head with the beasts of the stall.

Angels adore him in slumber reclining,

Maker and Monarch and Savior of all.

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,

dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid.

Star in the East, the horizon adorning,

guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Shall we not yield him, in costly devotion

odours of Edom and offrings devine.

Gems of the mountains and pearls of the ocean

myrrh or gold from the mine?

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,

dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid.

Star in the East, the horizon adorning,

guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,

dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid.

Star in the East, the horizon adorning,

guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Let's face it. A happy Christmas text emoji doesn't bring the glow of opening a personally handwritten envelope

And seeing reindeer standing in the sparkling snow, surrounded by pine trees

or maybe that family photo, where your nephew is two feet taller and his skin has miraculously cleared up.

And this is why we're singing The Christmas Song

To reassure everyone that we will always find a way to celebrate what is beautiful about this time of year.

So here's a Christmas card from all of us to all of you.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,

Jack Frost nipping at your nose,

Yule tide carols being sung by a choir,

And folks dressed up like Eskimos,

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe

help to make the season bright.

Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow

will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santas on his way;

Hes loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.

And every mothers child is gonna spy

to see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so, Im offering this simple phrase to kids from one to ninety two.

Although its been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you.

And so, Im offering this simple phrase to kids from one to ninety two.

From our 2019 holiday concert, here is Los Peces en el Rio,

one of the most popular Villancicos beloved in Spain and Latin America.

La virgen se es ta peinando,

Entre cortina y cortina.

Sus. Cabellos son de oro,

y el peine de plata fina.

Pero mira como beben los peces en el rio,

Pero mira como beben por ve a Dios nacido.

Beben y beben y vuelven a beber,

los peces en el rio por ver a Dios nacer.

La virgen est lavando y tendiendo en el romero.

Los Angelitos cantando, y el romero floreciendo.

Pero mira como beben los peces en el rio

Pero mira como beben por ver a Dios nacido.

Beben y beben y vuelven a beber,

Now I get the thrill to introduce a piece that I wrote with my ACC friend Denny Wyndbrandt.

For families facing poverty, illness, or civil unrest, the holiday season can prove difficult and can be particularly hard for children...

and this year has been especially challenging.

In Hanukkah Lullaby Denny and I try to answer the question...

What can a parent say to their children during times of adversity to give them inner strength to be resilient?

In our video we show - through our own historic family portraits the beauty and diversity of our community of singers.

Plus, we peek back at the child in us- who's grown into the adults we are today.

As I light the Hanukkah candles, I wish you and yours resilience and love.

But we cant always see what we dont believe.

Close your eyes. Feel the Maccabee in your heart.

Sleep safe tonight.

Tomorrow well add one more light.

Faith shines in the darkest of times

Youll never be alone.

You dont need to be afraid.

Youve given love a home

Small but strong, youre a Maccabee standing tall

Sleep safe tonight.

Tomorrow well add one more light.

Eight candles burning so bright.

Bright as the summer sun.

Loves pure light.

I wish you may, I wish you might, live the miracle of a blessed life.

Its not the holidays until the angels sing. And boy dont I know it.

The Angel City Chorale is spectacular. Their voices are wonderful. They soar and they lift us up.

Hello from Sydney Australia. We loved you in LA. And weve been to one of your holiday concerts and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The instant the choirs voices come together is like pure magic and I feel a warmth that I havent felt since my childhood Christmases.

You know, its not the holidays til the angels sing. I have an angel here that reminds me of them.

Angel City really is a treasure for Los Angeles. But even more so, its a national treasure.

My first trip to see Angel City perform at Christmas was a couple of years ago when I came from Arizona.

And as soon as we walked in and all of the choir came out, it felt like home.

We love ACC Choral Director Sue Fink. She is so entertaining and talented and the person youd most want to share an eggnog with.

So now we look forward to the holiday season. It would not be the same without the Angel City Chorale.

We havent missed a concert in 19 years. Each one fills us with eagerness and emotion. And gives us a thrill of proudness and gratitude.

When I hear you sing, you make me feel happy, you make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me feel energetic, I feel passionate, I sing along

You give me hope and fill my soul with joy.

In closing, Im reminded of the Swing Era classic, And the Angels Sing. Its first line goes, We meet and the angels sing the sweetest songs I ever heard.

Well, thats how I feel about the chorale.

I am Winifred Neisser, Executive Director of Angel City Chorale.

Normally during our concerts, I share stories of Angel City Chorale's milestones in the past year.

When the pandemic hit, we thought our year was over, that we might have to shut down and wait it out.

But that is not the spirit of ACC.

I wont let them break me down to dust.

I know that theres a place for us

I bless the rains down in Africa

Angels like to fly but this year we were grounded.

Thats when Angel City Unchoraled was born, a showcase of at-home talents.

Name That Tune has just taken on a new edge.

We had to do some tap-dancing to keep going.

To sing again amidst the lock-down, we made a virtual video.

It helped us to find our voice.

Gloria!

It went so well we thought, why not do a virtual concert?

But rehearsals...

Everybody un-mute...

And recordings were far from perfect.

Going in, we didnt realize the time and money it would take.

But coming out, we discovered a silver lining,

that unity and community are more than words.

Theyre who we are.

Creating music gives us strength, and we needed it,

as we also were confronted with the challenges too many faced this year.

Members were affected by COVID-19, job loss, loneliness, and the issues that bubbled up surrounding racial injustice.

We also lost two beloved choir members to cancer- Beverly Padway and Coral Reid to whom we are dedicating this concert.

It means so much to us that you are here tonight to bring in the holidays with our ACC spirit!

We learned this year in a profound way that we are all connected.

You are re-enforcing that lesson by sharing this evening with us from wherever you are.

Live concerts are our chief source of revenue.

Though we have not been able to perform them this year, doing this virtual concert and making it available to everyone is our gift to you.

However, if you are able to support us with a donation, to keep our music flowing and the spirit of ACC alive,

please click the donate button or go to our website, angelcitychorale.org

Thank you for being a part of our family and celebrating with us.

Thank you to those who have already donated and to those who still plan to.

We cannot do this without you.

We wish you happy, meaningful holidays and the spirit of love and community in the coming year.

Here's a visit from the ghost of our Christmas concerts past.

Enjoy this celtic take on one of my favorite carols.

Happy holidays.

Growing up in LA where it goes from Summer: sunny and 75 to Winter: sunny and 65, I have always of course been fascinated by snow globes.

As a little girl I remember holding one and seeing a perfect miniature world inside.

I would make a secret wish, give it a little shake and magic! The snow would swirl as if in answer.

Grown up me wishes for all of us good health, hope and the blue green forever turning world.

Its the night before Christmas, and all through the house

not a creature is stirring not even a mouse.

The stockings are hung by the chimney with care.

But hopes for St. Nicholas I wish I could share.

I am new to this world, I arrived here this morn

to this beautiful planet though beat up and torn. I dont need a gift, need no more than Ive got.

Hear the unspoken wish from a tiny, tiny tot.

I only want the world for Christmas,

the blue green forever turning world for Christmas.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I want it for keeps and I promise to share,

so that everyone who wants can cuddle and care.

I only want the world for Christmas,

the blue green forever turning world for Christmas.

To restore, to repossess.

Please make it last, my fate is in your hands.

Oh give me a present for the future.

You could follow your heart but you follow a whim,

and fill up your stockings way over the brim.

Ignoring the signs in our frail crystal ball

you wish away, wish away, wish away all.

The moon on the crest of the new fallen snow

gives a lustre of midday to objects below. Why your eyes wont see

when theyre given all this light.

I wonder, I wonder this very special night.

I only want the world for Christmas,

the blue green forever turning world for Christmas.

To restore, to repossess.

Please make it last, my fate is in your hands.

Oh give me, oh give me, oh give me,

oh give me a present for the future.

Singing choral music has been crowned one of the most dangerous acts one can do these days.

Who would have thought?

Since we were unable to sing together, I wanted to create a safe way folks could make music in person.

Then a bell went off in my head. Literally. How about a bell choir?

We met and rehearsed socially distanced in my cul de sac entertaining my neighbors to no end.

With some coaching and writing help from Mark McCormick, our chime ringers became part of our orchestra.

Youll hear them in this performance of Veni Veni Emmanuel.

Hi, I'm Heather with Angel City Youth Chorale.

Our group is a beautiful example of ACC's mission to continue building community.

We began in 2018 in collaboration with Boys and Girls Clubs.

And even through the pandemic, we've continued our weekly sessions on Zoom without missing a beat.

The song you're about to hear came to be from our first session together after the killing of George Floyd.

We started with a discussion, welcoming anyone who wanted to share their feelings about what was going on in the world - as a choir family and a safe space.

Some shared, some quietly listened, one held up a sign she had made that read: I Can't Breathe.

I was so moved by the conversation and profound thoughts of these young children, I started writing the piece the next day.

That's why I tell the kids, it's really their song, it comes from their voices.

As we learned the piece, we discussed the concept of Ubuntu, a philosophy originating from Southern African cultures that expresses humanity's compassion, kindness, and oneness.

I am because you are.

Together, we hold in our hearts the spirit of Ubuntu. We are all very different, but we are all universally inter-connected.

We are one.

Listen now, and learn to change.

Look at things through our eyes and see.

Hear our voice. You have a choice.

Well show you a better way to be!

We will rise together, we will stand together,

we will lift up our faces to the sun!

There is hope in our future because we love each other.

We will rise up together as one!

Learn to love as children love.

Everyone has so much more to give.

Follow us now, down the right road.

Well show you a better way to live!

We will rise together. We will stand together.

We will lift up our faces to the sun.

There is hope in our future because we love each other.

We will rise up together as one!

We sing Ubuntu oh we sing Ubuntu Ubuntu.

I am because you are!

We sing Ubuntu, oh we sing Ubuntu, Ubuntu.

I am because we are.

We will rise together. We will stand together,

We will life up our faces to the sun!

There is hope in our future because we love each other.

We will rise up together as one!

Ubuntu.

Rise up together as one!

Ubuntu.

Rise up together as one!

Ubuntu,

We are one!

Candles symbolize so much for us all...

a light in the darkness especially in winter and during troubled times we see hope in the flames.

One holiday tradition shared by many is to place a candle in the window for loved ones who are away to guide them home.

Lighting candles seems truly fitting for our virtual concert.

We can't be with all the people we love this holiday, but our flames send a message that we WILL be together again.

We invite you to sing along with us from home and weve provided you with lyrics to make it easy.

And if any of you would like to send us a video of you singing we would sure love it!

Its not the holidays til the angels sing.

Do You Hear What I Hear was written in 1962 as a plea for peace. Bing Crosby was the one who made it famous and there have been many covers of it since.

We hope you'll enjoy our version from our 2015 holiday concert.

Said the night wind to the little lamb Do you see what I see? Do you see what I see?

Way up in the sky little lamb Do you see what I see? Do you see what I see?

A star, a star dancing in the night. With a tail as big as a kite. With a tail as big as a kite.

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy. Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear?

Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy? Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear?

A song, a song high above the tree. Ah, with a voice as big as the sea. With a voice as big as the sea.

Said the little boy to the mighty king, Do you know what I know? Do you know what I know?

In your palace warm mighty king. Do you know what I know? Do you know what I know?

A child, a child shivers in the cold. Let us bring him silver and gold. Let us bring him silver and gold.

Said the king to the people everywhere, Listen to what I say! Listen to what I say.

Pray for peace people everywhere! Listen to what I say. Listen to what I say.

A Child, a Child, sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light! He will bring us goodness

Oo ah oo / loo loo loo loo loo Oh listen to what I say. Listen listen listen listen to what I say.

Oo ah oo / loo loo loo loo loo A Child, a Child sleeping in the night. He will bring us goodness.

Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear?

Nine months ago we were afraid that choral singing and ACC might end.

But the resilience of this group astounds me. We, like many of you, refused to give up.

When you see the credits at the end you will see the names of the amazing team that emerged to create, teach, record, film, edit and assemble this performance.

We thank you for joining us on this journey.

This virtual format has given us a chance to connect with folks not just in Los Angeles but all over the world.

Wed be happy if youd leave your comments below and subscribe.

We wanted as many people as possible to see our show, so this concert is our gift to you.

To every one of you who are donating to keep our angels flying -- Thank you! Thank you!

Our experience is truly captured in this finale.

We have a long association with composer Christopher Tin, joyfully performing and recording his music with him.

And like a ltreasured ornament we saved Njooni Waaminifu to put up last.
