let's test your ability to spot errors

in a couple of sentences start with this

one like many people with a common cold

over-the-counter remedies did not help

me so what's wrong with that well the

problem is is that this says that

over-the-counter remedies are like many

people with a common cold so how would

you articulate the problem with this

sentence well what you do is you would

say the problem is this element right

here and that is a prepositional phrase

like is the preposition people is the

object like many people with a common

cold is the prepositional phrase and the

thing is is that if this sentence

started this way how would it have to be

completed well you'd have to say like

many people with a common cold I

received no help from over-the-counter

remedies or something like that so the

problem here is that it's a you've got a

prepositional phrase and it creates a

meaning that is unintended by the author

how about this one the barrage was a

trick to pretend more rebels were in the

area now what's the problem here

well the problem in meaning that crops

up is that there is no one to do the

pretending that is the technical term

there is agent

there is no actor or agent named by this

to pretend more rebels were in the area

to do this pretending and that creates a

kind of muddiness in meaning so the

problem with this sentence would be this

thing here to pretend more rebels were

in the area and what this thing is of

course is an infinitive phrase

so this sentence - does not work you

might want to say something like the

rebels mounted a barrage in order to

pretend that their numbers were greater

than they in fact were so now it's the

rebels clearly are the ones doing the

pretending whereas here the agent

doesn't come through clearly so this

infinitive phrase causes a problem
