Doing online research: Online database and internet resources
A very important thing in writing scientific article is
Getting the data and information that support our argumentation
Information can be earned by various sources, places, and methods
We are living in the 21 century which are called "The information era"
Where information are everywhere and very easy to be accessed
Because of that, we need skill to choose the valid information that suit our need
In writing an academic work, using internet as a mean of information gathering is the last choice
As a priority, we need to use books, journals, and other more validated sources
To search those sources, we can start from the information sources that are possessed and subscribed by the library
The library website provide a lot of benefit for the students to access various needed information sources
The methods of accessing the library's information resources is
First, go to the library website that is http://library.uph.edu
Then, log in using your NIM
And the password, which you can get by asking the circulation desk or ext. 1384/1385 by mentioning your NIM
Third, look at the menu on the left side and click the recommended links.
This page provide a lot of links from various sources that provides full-text articles of journal, skripsi, and theses
From a lot of major/discipline
On the most bottom, there is a link that will make you go to another page that provides links from the full-text local journal
Fourth, if you go back to the main page and click the "E-Journal and E-book" link
You be directed to a page which provide access to the online databases that the library subscribe
On the page, we are given the list of databases that we subscribed,
and which discipline it covers
Fifth, to continue click the "Here" in Click Here on the bottom
Then, there will be a list of database to choose from
For example, we choose EBSCO for all discipline. So we will be directed to the EBSCO website
How to access EBSCO
First, click EBSCO research databases, and then choose the database that suits our need
Or if it is not there, choose "Academic Search Complete" for all subjects
Then click continue
Third, in the search page, make sure the search methods is advanced search
Fourth, use the search field to enter the keywords that can be modified according to the information that we already knew
For example, we can submit the subject, author, title of journal and article, etc.
You can choose it from "Select a Field"
Fifth, limit the search by using search options
And sixth,
After all is set, click search
How to access E-book from Ebrary
First, from the list of databases, choose "Ebrary"
Second, in the search page, click advanced to activate the advanced search
Third, there are two boxes available
The first box is to deciding and changing the type of the keyword,
And the second box is to enter the keywords
For example, we can pick the subject for the type of the keyword
And then type in the subject we need
For example, management
Fourth, to add the search field, we can click the + button
Fifth,
For example we want to add another keywords like enterprise
Sixth, click search
Seventh, after the list of result has been generated, click at one of the titles.
And eight, after the table of contents has shown up, click "Read Online"
In the left side to read it on the computer
How to use Boolean operator
Boolean is used to strengthen the search we are doing with electronic search tools
It can be used to narrowing down the search result,
Or widening it
There are 3 types of Boolean,
First, the "AND"
Used to narrowing down the search with combining the keywords,
To gain information which has all the keywords we wanted
For example, we want to narrow down the search to "Early Childhood Education"
So, we can input "Education" AND "Early childhood"
Second, Boolean OR
Used to broaden the search result on two or more keywords
Usually the use of OR take place when we want to search keywords from different languages,
or synonyms
For example,
Searching for "behaviour" OR "behavior"
Or,
"Soto Makasar" OR "Coto Makasar"
Thrid, the "NOT"
Used to limit or extracting a group of keyword from it's bigger group/category
For example,
We want to extract the "Toyota" keywords from the big group of "Car Brands"
So, we can use Car NOT Toyota
Using internet resources
After doing the search using the journal and library resources,
You still need to search from the internet
So, it is recommended that you are doing the following steps
First, decide on the keywords that you will use to search on the search engine
You can use Thesaurus.com or other online thesaurus that are available on the net
Thesaurus have differences with dictionary because thesaurus can show you equivalent words or synonyms
antonyms
and related words
Second, use the 3 types of Boolean that have been explained before
Use Boolean to do search in the search engine like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.
For some of the search engines, there are usually symbols representing the Boolean operators
For example, the symbol for AND is +
The symbol for OR is |
The symbol for NOT is -
All of this function is actually present in the advanced search mode in search engines
But, with using these symbols, you search the information from the simple search without having to use advanced search
If we want to use Boolean, you can use it like the following example :
To search the information about internet AND websites OR situs, but NOT portal,
We can use the Boolean like this:
internet[space]+(website[space]|[space]situs)[space]-portal
Various search engines in the internet
Third, some other search engines beside Google are :
Directory
That is list of websites that has been grouped according to the subjects
For example, dmoz.org
meta search engine
That is search engines that can search from two or more different search engines
For example, dogpile.com
Semantic Search Engine
That is a search engine that can group together search result according to the meaning and context of the keywords
For example,
kngine.com
Deep Web search engine
That is a search engine that can search various information and websites that cannot be searched by a normal search engine like Google, Bing, and Yahoo
Fourth, the most sophisticated search engine on these days is Google
Because it has a lot of better features compared to other search engines, like Google Book
For books
Google Scholars, for journals
Google translate, a translation software,
etc.
Other than that, there are various command to search from the simple search page
or basic search page
So you could use the advanced search without going to go to advanced search option
How to search on Google
Here are some ways to use Google to do information searching
using the Boolean techniques to widening, narrowing, or sharpening so that you can conduct a more effective information searching
Use the symbol AND or +, OR or | and NOT or -
use the intext: or allintext:
to search specific website using the keyword or certain text
use intitle: or allintitle:
to search the websites that the title of the website contains a certain word
Use inurl: or allinurl:
to search for a website that the address or url contains specific word
use site: to limit the website domain from the needed information and accessing the information of the web without going to the said website
use filetype: to get documents with a specific format
Website Evaluation
After we get various websites as our sources of information,
So the next important step is that we have to be able to consider and evaluate which website we can use and which we can't
If we can use it, what's the reason? And if not, why?
There are some principle that can be used as a list to check and evaluate a website
First, check the domain
This can certificate how valid and formal a website is
Website with a .com domain, or commercial
.net, or general,
.biz, or for business,
are usually will have a lower validation form education domain like .edu
.org for organization,
or .gov for government
Second, check the author and who is in charge for the website
This is related to the authoritative of the domain
As clear and transparent the competencies of the author,
And who and what is the purpose of the website,
So the website will be more valid to use
We can check the "about us" sections
vision and mission of the organization or the writer,
to make sure of this
Third, check whether the website is constantly updated?
This is very important, because on some discipline, they need a very up to date information with the most current condition
For example, medicine, pharmacy, science, etc.
Fourth, check whether the website objectives are scientific or not
A lot of website that in an instant give a very accurate information, but actually it is advertisement for trading
or jokes, or hoax, etc.
read not only one article
but read some of the articles to give a better picture of the website objective for us
I hope this explanation about internet research is useful for you
