THIS IS HOME

THIS IS HOME

I'M BOB NEVINS.

VIETNAM VETERAN THAT STARTED THE SARATOGA WARHORSE PROGRAM.

FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS AFTER I CAME HOME,

IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO ADJUST, FIND MY PLACE,

LOOK FOR PURPOSE AGAIN IN LIFE.

WHEN WARHORSE CAME ALONG,

AND I STARTED THAT, THINGS STARTED COMING TOGETHER

BECAUSE I KNEW HOW THE OTHER VETERANS,

WHAT THEY'D BEEN THROUGH.

ESPECIALLY THE NEW GENERATION OF VETERANS.

Campbell: I WENT OUT TO THE FARM

WHERE THEY HOLD THE PROGRAM IN SARATOGA

AND REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE THINGS

I HAD EVER SEEN.

SO, I JUST GOT HOOKED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.

I WAS ASKED TO MAKE A TALK ABOUT THIS TO THE ROTARY CLUB HERE.

I DID. THERE WAS A LITTLE STORY IN THE PAPER THE NEXT DAY.

THE DAY AFTER THAT, I GOT A PHONE CALL.

A MAN SAID, "HI, I'M JIM RHODES.

I RUN EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN."

Rhodes: WHEN I READ THE ARTICLE

THAT ANNE HAD DONE AT THE ROTARY CLUB,

I WAS VERY INTRIGUED,

AND I KNEW ANNE'S POSITION IN THE AIKEN COMMUNITY

AND IN THE THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY.

SO, I RIDE OUT HERE SURREPTITIOUSLY

AND SUDDENLY SEE THESE PASTURES

THAT LOOK LIKE LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.

I GO HOME, CALL BOB, AND SAID,

"YOU'VE GOT TO GET DOWN HERE RIGHT AWAY."

Nevins: SO, I CAME DOWN, WE TALK TO JIM.

WE PUT TOGETHER AN ARRANGEMENT,

AND THAT STARTED TAKING OFF.

WHAT WE DIDN'T EXPECT WAS THE WHOLE AIKEN COMMUNITY

GETTING INVOLVED AND HOW GENEROUS THEY WERE,

AND THEN HELPING US SUPPORT THE VETERANS

AND SUPPORT SARATOGA WARHORSE.

Campbell: THE END OF FEBRUARY,

WE PUT ON A BIG FUNDRAISER AND CALLED IT THE BUCKAROO BALL.

WE HAD EIGHT OF THESE RESCUE HORSES

GO THROUGH A VIRTUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM.

-$6,500, $7,000.

$6,500, $7,000, $7,000.

-AND THEN WE HAD A REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE

BY JESSE YOUNG AND TWO REMARKABLE JUILLIARD MASTERS.

THREE, FOUR.

WELL, WARHORSE ACTUALLY GOT STARTED ALMOST BY ACCIDENT.

I HAD GONE OUT TO LOOK INTO THE HORSE EQUATION,

AND PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL HORSES WERE,

AND I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT HORSES. SO, I WENT OUT,

AND I READ ABOUT PROCEDURES ABOUT NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP.

AND I DECIDED TO GO OUT AND JUST TRY THAT FOR MYSELF.

AND I WENT OUT, AND I DID THAT,

AND THE REACTION I HAD TO IT WAS VERY POWERFUL.

REALIZING I COULD GO FROM NOT KNOWING ABOUT HORSES

TO BE ABLE TO DIALOGUE, IN A SENSE,

WITH HORSES IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.

AND THAT REALLY STRUCK ME AS VERY POWERFUL.

AND THEN AS I CONTINUED TO READ

ABOUT RECORD SUICIDES IN THE MILITARY,

THIS IS THE SAME THING THAT MY GENERATION WENT THROUGH.

OVER 50,000 VIETNAM VETERANS HAD TAKEN THEIR OWN LIVES.

SO, ONE DAY, I DECIDED TO GO OUT AND FIND SOME OF THESE VETERANS,

BRING 'EM TOGETHER, SHOW THEM THIS PROCEDURE.

AND THE RESULTS THAT THEY GOT

WERE PRETTY ASTOUNDING EMOTIONALLY.

AND THEY SOMEHOW STARTED RECONNECTING WITH THEMSELVES.

SO, I REALIZED THAT THERE REALLY WAS SOMETHING GOING ON HERE.

SO, WE STARTED FORMALIZING THAT,

AND THEN HOLDING FORMAL CLASSES.

AND THEN IT JUST KEPT GROWING TO THE POINT WHERE

WE WENT FROM A FEW VETERANS TO OVER 250 GRADUATES NOW.

I WROTE "DARKNESS" IN THE KITCHEN

OF MY APARTMENT IN NEW YORK.

AND I HAD BEEN THROUGH KIND OF A TERRIFYING ACID EXPERIENCE.

AND I SAT THERE THINKING ABOUT...

HOW TERRIFIED...

MY FRIENDS WERE IN VIETNAM AND WHAT --

HOW SAFE I WAS AND HOW --

BUT DID IT PUT ME IN TOUCH WITH

TERROR AND SADNESS AND EMPTINESS?

AND I THOUGHT, MY GOD,
