The process of change

might be initiated by external pressure

but for that process to lead to deep

lasting transformational change

it has to come from the inside out.

It has to start with the heart.

I have the privilege of meeting with so many

different leaders in my work, all the time.

Leaders that are navigating many different types of change.

For some, it might be that they're

going through a merger

or see a need for changing some aspect of their business

For others, it might be that their organizaton has been

going through a decline for a long time

and they need to find a way to get people behind

a shared vision. For others it might be that

they have identified

an unhealthy aspect of their culture.

And for others again, it might be that they're navigating

a public crisis and they need to

find a way to move ahead.

What all these leaders,

and what I think many of you have in common

is that they have a desire and a need

for deep, lasting transformational change.

However, so many times, the change initiatives

the corporate culture values or

the vision statements, just become like band-aids

things that just cover the issues for a time

but they don't actually address them

in any deeper way.

Research shows that 70% of

all change initiatives fail.

And a recent study by Gartner that surveyed

200 HR leaders, only about

30% of them saw

that the culture change initiatives

they were going through, actually lead to

the desired result.

The issue with this is that, in an organization

when a change initiative fails.

It is like a match that has been lit and that

gives the hope of light in a dark room

but as soon as it burns out

the room feels darker than ever before.
