The semivowels have characteristics of both consonants and vowels in different words.
The / w / and the / j / sounds on the chart are shown in green, which means that they

This voiced labial-velar approximant semivowel has these letter combinations:
most commonly W, sometimes WH, or QU as / kw /, sometimes GU or SU, and rarely O, ON, and

This voiced unrounded palatal approximant semivowel can have these letter combinations:
Y, and I, and sometimes U, UE, and EW, making / juː /, and rarely EAU.

sounds apart from the different was of spelling them and the fact that letter combinations
