at the end of the video or in the notes below

we are starting with the verb GET

and ten of its many different meanings with different particles

in two parts

here are the first five in part one

there's a link at the end of this video to part two

where we look at five more multi-word verbs with GET

number one is GET IN

two examples

and another one

we get in a car and we use in not on with cars

perhaps because we can't stand up inside

and we are very conscious of three dimensions

number two is GET OUT OF

example

this isthe opposite of GET IN

and the most common use is:

and like in out has three dimensions

number three is GET ON

we say get on the bus

you can say get in the bus too

but you can't say get on the car

well you can but nobody travels on a car

The train is like a bus

and we always say

and even

number four is get off

we say off with buses and trains

this is the opposite of GET ON

you could say get out of the bus but mostly people say get off the bus

but nobody says get off the car

unless they're talking to this guy

number five is get away

here's George

he's bored

he needs to get away for a holiday

his means escape sometimes literally

his Jim who also wants to get away

but not for a holiday

that's the first five multi-word verbs with get

and here is a quick check

here are five sentences

and you have to fill the gaps with the right particle

I'll give you ten seconds to think about it

you can pause the video if you like

okay here are the answers
