((COURTNEY)) A BOILER LEAK

CANCELED CLASSES FOR STUDENTS

AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. HOW

MUCH DAMAGE IT CAUSED.

A WOMAN SAYS SHE WAS SEXUALLY

ASSAULTED WHILE SHE WAS BEING

TRANSPORTED TO A HOSPITAL IN

JULY. TODAY...A FORMER

AMBULANCE DRIVER WAS IN COURT.

A TEENAGER WAS SHOT AND

KILLED. WHERE POLICE FOUND

THEIR SUSPECT TWO YEARS LATER.

"FROM YOUR LOCAL NEWS

LEADER... THIS IS WCIA THREE

NEWS AT FIVE"

"As you maintain a building

that's older, you're gonna

have issues." ((PAUL)) AND ONE

OF THOSE GAVE STUDENTS AT

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL THE DAY

OFF. CLASSES WERE CANCELED

BECAUSE CREWS HAD TO SHUT OFF

THE HEAT TO FIX A LEAK. GOOD

EVENING... I'M PAUL CICCHINI.

((JENNIFER)) AND I'M JENNIFER

ROSCOE. THAT SCHOOL IS

UNDERGOING A 99-

MILLION-DOLLAR EXPANSION RIGHT

NOW. BUT SCHOOL LEADERS SAY

THE LEAK IS NOT RELATED TO

CONSTRUCTION. WCIA THREE'S

COURTNEY BUNTING IS LIVE IN

CHAMPAIGN COURTNEY -- WHAT

CAUSED IT?

((COURTNEY)) IT WAS AN ISSUE

WITH THEIR BOILER. IT HAD BEEN

LEAKING SINCE LAST MONDAY.

THIS BUILDING HAS SOME YEARS

ON IT... IT WAS BUILT IN THE

1950'S. THE CHAMPAIGN

FEDERATION OF TEACHERS NOTICED

A PROBLEM WITH THE HEAT IN THE

BUILDING LAST MONDAY. THEY

TOLD SCHOOL LEADERS...WHO

REACHED OUT TO THEIR

CONTRACTOR. THE CONTRACTOR DID

SOME THERMAL HEAT IMAGING TO

FIND OUT THE LEAK WAS COMING

FROM A HOT WATER PIPE. THEY

CANCELED SCHOOL TODAY TO PATCH

UP THE LEAK.

"When you talk about what our

taxpayers wanted, what the

communtiy wanted in regards to

keeping central central, we're

gonna do our best job as a

district to try and maintain

that. And so we wanted to

maintain this building, and so

that's what we've been doing:

just trying to maintain this

building." ABOUT 3-THOUSAND

GALLONS OF WATER HAVE BEEN

LOST THROUGH THAT LEAK. AS I

MENTIONED...THIS PART OF THE

BUILDING IS OLDER... THE OTHER

PARTS OF THE BUILDING ALREADY

HAVE NEW BOILERS THANKS TO

REFERENDUM.

((COURTNEY)) STAFF MEMBERS

WERE ABLE TO WORK TODAY

DESPITE THE LEAK. STUDENTS

WILL BE BACK IN SCHOOL

TOMORROW. THANKS COURTNEY.

((JENNIFER)) THE CENTRAL HIGH

SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

SHOULD BE DONE BY 2022. IT

WILL DOUBLE THE SIZE OF THE

SCHOOL. AND ALSO UPDATE THE

H-VAC SYSTEMS AND TAKE AWAY

THE TEMPORARY CLASSROOMS.

((PAUL)) A FORMER E-M-T WITH

O-S-F WHO IS ACCUSED OF

PRESSURING A WOMAN IN HIS

AMBULANCE INTO ORAL SEX WAS IN

COURT TODAY. JEFFREY SANFORD

OF GIFFORD IS CHARGED WITH

CRIMINAL SEXUAL ASSAULT. IT

HAPPENED IN JULY LAST YEAR.

THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS...

AN ASSAULT KIT WAS TAKEN AND

CAME BACK WITH A D-N-A MATCH

TO SANFORD. THE SHERIFF'S

OFFICE ARRESTED HIM YESTERDAY.

SANFORD SAYS... HE HAD BEEN A

PARAMEDIC FOR 23 YEARS. O-S-F

SAYS... HE NO LONGER WORKS FOR

THEM.

((PAUL)) WE HAVE NEW

INFORMATION ABOUT A NEARLY 2-

YEAR-OLD MURDER. POLICE MADE

AN ARREST TODAY. THEY SAY

18-YEAR- OLD RICKY GREEN OF

URBANA WAS SHOT AND KILLED ON

APRICOT DRIVE IN CHAMPAIGN. IT

HAPPENED IN MARCH 2018. AN

ARREST WARRANT WAS ISSUED LAST

MONTH FOR 20 YEAR OLD MICHEAL

CHATMAN. HE WAS ARRESTED TODAY

IN PLANO. HE'S AWAITING

EXTRADITION TO CHAMPAIGN.

((PAUL)) A MAN IN CHAMPAIGN WAS

ARRESTED FOR NOT PROPERLY

TRANSPORTING MARIJUANA. 21

YEAR OLD BENJAMIN BASSEY THE

THIRD WAS PULLED OVER ON WEST

GREGORY AVENUE YESTERDAY.

POLICE FOUND HIS LICENSE WAS

SUSPENDED AND HE HAD MARIJUANA

THAT WAS NOT IN AN APPROVED

CONTAINER.

((JENNIFER)) FIRE CREWS IN

DANVILLE WERE STRETCHED THIN

THIS MORNING WHEN SEVERAL

BUILDINGS CAUGHT FIRE. THERE

WERE TWO LOCATIONS. ONE ON

MADISON STREET BETWEEN HARMON

AND NEW YORK... AND THE OTHER

NEAR MCKINLEY AVENUE AND

ROMINE STREET. THREE BUILDINGS

AT HARMON AND MADISON WERE

VACANT. TWO OF THEM BURNED

DOWN. THE OTHER SUFFERED HEAT

DAMAGE. THESE ARE WITHIN THE

AREA OF THE NEW CARLE

DEVELOPMENT-- SO THEY WERE

SCHEDULED TO BE TORN DOWN

ANYWAY AND THEIR UTILITIES

WERE ALREADY SHUT OFF. BECAUSE

OF THAT, CREWS DID NOT TRY TO

SAVE THE BUILDINGS-- THEY JUST

KEPT THE FIRES UNDER CONTROL.

((JENNIFER)) BEFORE THAT--

CREWS WERE CALLED OUT TO A

HOUSE FIRE ON MCKINLEY AVENUE.

THAT STARTED AROUND 1:30. NO

ONE WAS INSIDE AT THE TIME.

THE HOUSE IS BELIEVED TO BE A

TOTAL LOSS. T-J PLACE SAYS HIS

MOTHER PASSED IT DOWN TO HIS

SISTER A FEW YEARS AGO.

"Kind of didn't believe it at

first, but as you can tell,

there's not much left of it.

My mother's the one that

called me, this was actually

her home. She was devastated."

NO WORD YET ON THE CAUSE FOR

EITHER FIRE.

((PAUL)) 2 OF 3 PEOPLE KILLED

IN A PLANE CRASH LAST WEEK

WERE LAID TO REST TODAY.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR FRANK AND

CINDA EDWARDS WERE HELD THIS

AFTERNOON. FRANK WAS THE

FORMER MAYOR OF SPRINGFIELD.

CINDA WAS THE SANGAMON COUNTY

CORONER. PEOPLE LINED THE

STREETS OF DOWNTOWN

SPRINGFIELD TO SAY GOODBYE.

FIREFIGHTERS... POLICE AND

CORONERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE

WERE PART OFTHE PROCESSION

FROM THE CHURCH TO THE COUNTY

COMPLEX BUILDING. COUNTY

WORKERS CAME OUT OF THE

BUILDING AND LINED THE STEPS

TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS. THE

MEMORIAL GATHERING FOR THE

OTHER PERSON ON BOARD -- JOHN

EVANS -- WILL BE TOMORROW AT

BUTLER FUNERAL HOMES IN

CHATHAM .

((JENNIFER)) IN AN AGE OF EMAIL

AND THE INTERNET, YOU MIGHT

FORGET ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO

DELIVER YOUR MAIL DAILY. WHY

TODAY IS THE PERFECT DAY TO

SAY THANKS. ((PAUL)) PLUS -- A

MAN IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS WAS

GIVEN THE TITLE "DIFFERENCE

MAKER". WHAT HE'S DOING IN HIS

COMMUNITY THAT'S CHANGING
