in this video I'll explain what relative

clauses are the people who live next

door are very nice the relative clause

here that's who live next door

provides information about the people

this is the subject and this is the verb

that matches people and this Clause

provides additional information about

the subject within the clause

there's a subject and a verb

you can change the sentence from the

plural to the singular and say the man

or woman who lives next door is very

nice the relative clause is here

this is singular so the information

within the relative clause has to match

the thing it's describing so here's the

subject this is the bird

they're both singular and within the

relative clause this subject and this

verb would also be singular the people

who live next door are very nice the man

who lives next door is very nice there

are many different ways to make relative

clauses the easiest way is to use who

for a person or that for a thing it's

also possible to use that for a person

I know someone who can help you the main

part of the sentence is I know someone

this is the subject this is the verb and

this is the object the relative Clause

is here all this information describes

this person someone this is the subject

and then the verb the main verb is help

notice that this sentence is in two

parts I know someone or I know a person

and she can help you to put this

together just change the pronoun here to

who and take the period off there and

that produces the longer sentence this

part of the sentence would also be

referred to as an adjective clause

I live in a city period it's growing

quickly period I can combine these two

sentences by eliminating this period I

live in a city change it to that and we

need to use the verb here just use the

contraction I live in a city that's

growing quickly this sounds better than

the previous two sentences that were

fairly short I live in a city it's

drawing quickly knowing how to use

relative clauses will make your

sentences sound better

here are two similar sentences that's

the house that had the party here's the

relative clause to describe house and

he's the person who had the party this

describes the person we use that for a

thing and who for a person but it is

possible to use that in place of who

he's the person that had the party

you
