all right hello hello hello hello hello hello everybody my name is steve ford

welcome to your first lesson of this year maybe you're watching this now in

2019 maybe you'll be watching this many years in the future who knows hi how are

you doing today let's see where everybody is from thank

you so much for waiting this is a live lesson and I know that there are so many

people in the house let's see who's in the house Steve in the house Steve from

Canada Haiti in the house algeria in the house oh yeah anybody else in the house

azerbaijan in the house on Duras in the house serbia in the house brazil in the

house anybody else in the house but i'll see you but a zero okay if that's all

the people in the house then I'm gonna stop the music and go to the lesson

alright I think there was a France in the house too

okay here we go with our lesson everybody I hope that everybody had a

great end of year celebration and we're gonna go straight into the lesson this

lesson is talking about ways of using to doing to do for doing Oh what's the

difference and how can we use these so let's go into it now what are you

looking forward to doing this year and I've got a losing

weight I've got be traveling see maybe saving some money D maybe finding some

love the love of your life or maybe e finding that great job so what is

something that you are looking forward to to doing and in case you don't know

looking forward to means the following it means I am enthusiastic I'm looking

forward to I am excited I'm looking forward to you really want to do

something you're excited about it so that's what it means and I'm curious to

know which one you are looking forward to doing are you looking forward to

traveling saving money finding love getting a great job you let me know in

your comments you can send your answer what are you looking forward to doing

this year at the following link and I'll send that here so let me know

let me know what you are looking forward to doing and I can play it in our live

video so we'll continue on with that I think for me I don't know let's start

off Steve what are you looking forward to doing well I'm looking forward to

teaching all of you English of course and I'm also looking forward to losing

weight yeah a little bit of weight everybody says Steve you don't need to

lose weight but yeah I ate too much at the end of last year and I'm looking

forward to to eating's know I'm looking forward to not eating well that kind of

slipped out yeah I'm looking forward to eating oh no no I'm looking forward to

losing weight it's a constant battle what are you looking forward to doing so

you let me know in your comments and I'm gonna check to

see if there are any comments here from from people for the oh I'm already

getting some messages here that's great okay welcome welcome welcome okay then

according to recent polls and if you don't know what a poll means when they

ask the public's opinion about something so according to recent polls North

Americans are really looking forward to a losing weight and exercising and see

trying to save money so those are the two top things that here in North

America people are looking forward to maybe your list of priorities is

different what you are looking forward to doing everybody's different now

you'll notice here that we have I am looking forward to losing weight now

this is a strange structure for a lot of people and it's forward as a preposition

to is a preposition and then losing is a verb plus ing I'm looking forward to

losing weight so just be careful with that one a lot of people who use that

structure I'm looking forward to sometimes they'll use it incorrectly and

they'll say I'm looking forward to lose weight please don't do that you want to

say I'm looking forward to losing weight and that's the way you want to say to in

this case is a preposition yeah yeah grammar grammar grammar so looking

forward to losing weight and that's the top answers there if we go to the next

one whatever you want to do you really need to believe on making a positive

change or believe in making a positive change with

answer do you think is correct and I can see here that we've got one vote for

letter B Paloma dice is saying that it's letter B any other ideas

yep okay everybody say oh all right okay so if you thought yeah yeah answers

coming in that's great if you thought that the answer was drumroll please

letter B believe in making a positive change high five high five give me a

high five for the new year yes it is to believe in

making a positive change yeah be careful not to say believe on that that's a

tricky question so excellent so if we go to the next one

and that could be you that could be you looking in the mirror you're the cat and

you're trying to imagine that you're something bigger a lion that could be

you yeah and that I can't that is so important that is not cliche you really

do the the first thing that you need to do this year is to to believe that you

can do something different and to believe that you can do it that you can

achieve it you can realize it you you need to believe in yourself that is so

important we can do it together yes we can and yes we can and if we go to the

next one a lot of people complain yeah remember if you if you're more

intermediate level if you don't know what to complain is complain is all you

know I don't like this this is difficult it's very normal for us to complain as

people as human beings and a lot of people complain about trying to get

started this year or a lot of people complain with trying to get started

do you think is correct okay we're getting some answers here all right all

right okay excellent oh okay so some people most people

thought that it was letter A yes complain about trying to get started so

if you thought that the answer was letter A give me a high five

that's correct it is letter A they complain about trying to get started and

maybe you're dreaming with traveling dreaming to traveling dreaming for to

traveling dreaming about traveling which one you think is correct let me know in

your answers okay okay we're getting kind of a mix of answers here maybe more

difficult for people that speak of romantic language okay interesting

interesting so I didn't make this easy for you but maybe this is your reality

this is really what you're thinking about doing is traveling it's always

nice to dream and the answer if you thought that it was letter D as in dog

yes they dream about traveling that is correct we say about dream about high

five we don't say dream with that's a translation directly from your language

we say dream about yes so if you thought it was dream about give me a high five

and what I want to tell you is that maybe you are dreaming verbs after

prepositions always become jaren's so every time that you have a preposition

like about the verb after it is going to be a gerund it's going to be ing

that's one of the few rules that works in English

99% of the time so if you have about if you have four if you have with the verb

after it is going to be a gerund it's going to be verb ing okay so did you get

it let's do a few more to make sure that you do remember it it really doesn't

matter what your plans are yeah so when we add ing to the verse below

they become nouns so this is another way that we can use ing I was talking about

one way and now I'm talking about another way when we talk about drinking

less helping others getting fit all of these are nouns these are things finding

a new job finding love quitting smoking mm-hmm I saw some guy Brazilian guy on

my Instagram and he had a nice picture of a glass of wine and an electronic

cigarette so does that count as quitting smoking I

don't know let me know in your comments hmm hmm okay

we have losing weight saving money so all of those as I said when we add ing

to the verbs below they become nouns we call them jaren's now sometimes taking

baby steps is better than doing nothing what do you think sometimes taking baby

steps is better than doing nothing in case you don't know taking baby steps

means starting slowly doing just a little maybe it's difficult to start

doing something this year or start to do something this year so little by little

bit by bit taking baby steps maybe that's not you maybe you don't like

taking babe steps okay

that's gold which do you feel like a to do or be doing what do you think would

be the correct answer here so I'm asking which do you feel like to do or which do

you feel like doing which one sounds correct to you if you like to do feel

like doing okay all right okay X okay most people got it most people got it

if you thought got that right a little high five that was kind of easy and what

do you feel like doing do you feel like doing number one right now number two or

number three I just I just have this feeling that most of you probably feel

like doing number one I mean it's hard to go from number one from number one to

the picture to to go from being a couch potato to taking baby steps that's

really hard there are a few people that they feel like hitting the ground

running that means to go very quickly yes yeah

so most people well look at all the number threes yeah Rhapsody saying

number three and then a Piero hey Andre and Foothill is a he's saying number one

yeah Valens Louise is gonna hit the ground is hitting the ground running

Sylvia is hitting the ground running we've got a lot of number 3s here okay

okay I'm surprised I I thought most people were gonna say number one being a

they feel like being a couch potato today but if but to think of it if if

you're watching my lesson you're already at least doing number two you're taking

baby steps or maybe you're hitting the

ground running that means of course that you're going fast taking baby steps is

better than doing nothing to take baby steps is better than doing that what let

me rephrase that take two take baby steps is better than to do nothing do

both sentences sound correct what do you think this is more high-level this is

this is kind of tricky so the question is do both sentences sound correct so is

it possible to say taking baby steps and to take baby steps to both work okay

now I'm with you most people in the answers in the live chat are saying that

taking baby steps is the correct one and it is taking baby steps is better than

doing nothing is correct but also to take babies better to take baby steps is

better than to do nothing is also correct but to take and to do sounds

more formal so that's probably why you didn't think the second one was possible

because we don't use it when we're speaking you're not going to hear it

normally because it's very formal it's very formal you would rarely use that

only in writing and maybe in a very formal speech yeah so we would say to to

take baby steps as possible but taking baby steps is common that's that's the

way that everybody uses that so maybe you learn something new today yes but

let's go back to those baby steps some people might ask why should I bother

taking or to take baby steps are both taking and to take correct what do you

think why should I bother

what do you think so son that Alvarado is saying that why

should I bother taking sounds better sounds more correct and Paloma dice is

saying that the first one also sounds more natural yes and Rhapsody is saying

but wait you could also say why should I bother

to take baby steps our both talking are both taking and to take correct and the

answer is yes they both are correct so this is the same idea that both are

correct but normally we use the gerund we use ing it just seems to flow better

off the tongue so you can use both once again both are possible yes and some

people might ask why yes why you should why should I bother taking or to take

baby steps and the reason is that it helps you to get things going in your

life to get things going in your life if you've watched my videos to get things

going means to put things in motion to get things moving to get things going in

your life many times when we ask the why about something we use the infinitive so

this is another important thing to remember because it's one of those

things in English grammar that usually works 99% of the time I am taking baby

steps to get things going to put things in motion so why are you why why are you

taking baby steps and then you want to use the infinitive I'm taking baby steps

to get things going yes and hopefully my English lesson gets

things going in your life yeah okay why are you watching this lesson to

improve my English so we use the infinitive to meet new people

now some verbs are followed by both gerunds and infinitives I like to plan

or I like planning ahead so you probably learned this in your basic or

intermediate course you remember where the teacher gives you this long list of

verbs that you can use with gerunds and infinitives then there's a long list of

verbs that you can only use with Gerrans a long list of verbs you can only use

with infinitives and the teacher says memorize this unfortunately that's the

only way to do it memorization it's kind of like prepositions so you can say both

I like to plan ahead or like planning ahead some verbs are followed by both

gerunds and infinitives as I was saying I promise to begin studying or to study

English every day well what do you think do you think it's possible or maybe you

already do study English every day but you can make that as a promise this year

I promise to begin studying or to study English every day yeah it works some

verbs are followed by only gerunds or infinitives so which one do you think is

correct I promise to avoid eating or to eat fast food which one do you think is

correct man I'm I'm on a diet just looking at that picture I'm like what

answer do you think is correct okay and I've got a vote for eating and I've got

a vote for it to eat and I've got a vote for both yeah see this is this is a

tricky one I included this one because a lot of my private students confuse avoid

to eat or avoid eating and in this case if you thought the answer was eating yes

high five only eating is possible yeah so we need to use the gerund here

infinitive here does not work fast food doesn't work either

or does it oh and yeah so high five if you thought that was correct and then we

go to the next one whatever you want to do you really need

to believe in making a positive change in your life you can do it

and that's my final message of this lesson is the first step before the baby

steps is that you need to believe that you can do it and it needs to be

something that you are passionate about that you really want to do your heart is

the is the major force that's pushing you to do something that's the beginning

before the baby steps and I hope that you enjoyed this lesson

I have more information about gerunds and infinitives I hope that you were
