This video explains how to fix your printer when you have a paper jam error message on

your computer or printer. Here well remove a paper jam from the back

of the printer. Do not remove jammed paper at this time, but

begin by removing any loose paper from the input or output tray.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer. Go to the back of the printer.

And unplug the power cord. Push in the two buttons on the sides of the

duplexer and remove it from the printer. Check the area for jammed paper. If you see

any jammed paper, remove it by pulling evenly with both hands to avoid tearing.

If the paper tears while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels

for any torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of

paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur.

If you do not see the jam in the rear access area, there might be a jam in the duplexer.

Push in the buttons on the rear of the duplexer and lower its cover.

Remove any jammed paper. Once all the paper is removed, close the duplexer

cover. Reinsert the duplexer back into the printer.

Plug the power cord back into the printer. Go to the front of the printer.

Press the Power button to turn the printer on.

Load paper into the input tray and adjust the guides so they are snug against the stack.

Try printing a self-test page. On the printer control panel, touch the Setup

button, which looks like a wrench. Touch Print Report from the menu.

Touch Self-Test Report from the menu to print the self test report.

If the test page prints successfully, the issue is resolved. If the test page does not

print, go on to the next step. In this step, we will clear any jams from

the paper trays. The second paper tray is an optional accessory. Remove any paper from

the output tray. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

Go to the back of the printer again. Unplug the power cord from the back of the

printer. Go to the front.

Raise the output tray on the main paper tray. Grasp any jammed paper with both hands and

then pull it toward you to remove it. Make sure that you remove any torn pieces of paper

or debris to prevent future jams. If you have a second paper tray installed,

lets check for the jam there. Lift the printer off of the second paper tray.

Remove any jammed paper from the second paper tray.

While the paper tray is still off of the printer, go to the back of the printer.

Push in the two buttons on the sides of the duplexer and remove it from the printer.

Go to the front of the printer. While the printer is off of the second paper

tray, lean the printer back and check for jams in the bottom of the printer. Remove

any paper you find. Once all paper is removed, reposition the

printer. Go to the back of the printer again.

Reinsert the duplexer back into the printer. Go to the front of the printer.

Position the printer back on top of the second paper tray.

Go to the back of the printer again. Plug the power cord back into the printer.

Go to the front of the printer. Press the Power button to turn the printer

on. Load paper into the input tray and adjust

the guides so they are snug against the stack.

And try printing a self-test page. On the printer control panel, touch the Setup

button which looks like a wrench. Touch Print Report from the menu.

Touch Self-Test Report from the menu to print the self test report.

If the test page prints successfully, the issue is resolved. If the test page does not

print, go on to the next step. Sometimes you might get a jam in the top of

the printer. Lets check the carriage path for the jam.

First we will check for the jam in the top of the printer. There are multiple compartments

where pieces of paper may get jammed. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

Go to the back of the printer. And unplug the power cord.

Then go to the front again. Open the top cover.

Check the compartments on the left side and the middle of the printer for jammed paper.

Gently remove any paper you see. Make sure you get all the small pieces that might tear

off. Check the rollers and wheels for any remaining pieces of paper. You must remove

all scraps of paper to prevent future jams. Small pieces of paper can easily stick in

places that are difficult to see. Use a flashlight to thoroughly search left and right inside

the printer. Searching the carriage path with a flashlight is probably the most important

step in preventing future jams. Dont worry if the carriage is in the way on the right

side. Well show you how to check that area later in this video.

Once all paper is removed, close the top cover of the printer.

Go to the back. And reconnect the power cord.

Then go to the front again. Press the Power button to turn the printer

back on. Open the top cover of the printer.

Press and hold the star button on the printer control panel until the carriage moves all

the way to the left. Go to the back again.

Unplug the power cord. And return to the front of the printer.

Check for any paper or obstructions on the right side of the printer. You can access

the right compartment from the opening in the middle of the printer.

While the carriage is on the left side, use a flashlight to check the far right of the

inside of the printer for obstructions. Remove any paper or debris you may find. Searching

inside the printer with a flashlight is probably the most important step in preventing future

jams. If you are unable to access the right compartment

from the middle of the printer, you can remove the cover over the right compartment. To remove

the cover, you must push down on the grooves and slide the cover towards the front of the

printer. You may have to use moderate force when pushing down to get the cover to unlatch

from the printer. Gently remove any paper or obstructions you

see. Make sure you get all the small pieces that might tear off.

Again, use a flashlight to make sure you have removed all the small pieces of paper from

inside the printer. Make sure the carriage can move freely by

gently pushing it to the right, and then to the left. This helps find any obstructions

that might block the movement of the carriage. After checking the carriage, slide the right

compartment cover back into its original position until it snaps into place.

Close the top cover of the printer. Go to the back of the printer.

And reconnect the power cord. Then go to the front again.

Press the Power button to turn the printer back on.

Load paper into the input tray and adjust the guides so they are snug against the stack.

Try to print a self-test page again. On the printer control panel, touch the Setup

button which looks like a wrench. Touch Print Report from the menu.

If the test page prints successfully, the issue is resolved. If the test page does not

print, go on to the next step. Sometimes paper can get jammed in the carriage

area. By removing and reseating the printheads, we can check for any obstructions.

Press the Power button to turn the printer on.

Open the top cover of the printer to access the printheads.

To access the printheads you must press and hold the star button until the carriage moves

all the way to the left. Be careful not to release the button until the carriage is on

the left side. If the carriage does not move to the left after holding down the star button,

turn the printer off and back on and then try holding down the star button again. The

printhead can be damaged if the carriage is not all the way to the left when doing this

step. Lift the blue print head latch.

Lift the blue handle on one of the printheads. Then use the handle to pull the print head

straight up and remove it from the printer. Set the printheads aside.

Repeat this for both printheads. Check the inside, sides, and underside of

the carriage for any debris or bits of paper. Remove any obstructions you find.

Reinsert each printhead into its color-coded slot. Make sure the label on the printheads

matches the label on the printhead latch. Press down firmly on both printheads to ensure

proper contact. Lower the printhead latch and snap it into

place. Close the top cover of the printer.

The printer will go through a warm-up period and then it will print two alignment pages.

If the alignment pages prints successfully, the issue is resolved. If the alignment pages

do not print, go on to the next step. Printer rollers get dirty from paper dust,

ink, and oil from your fingers. In this step, well clean them.

Before you begin, gather the following cleaning materials:

Clean, lint-free cloth. Clean cotton swabs.

Clean water to dampen the cloth. Distilled or bottled is preferable but not required.

Do not use alcohol or other chemical cleaners. Go to the back of the printer.

Disconnect the power cord. Push in the two buttons on the sides of the

duplexer and remove it. Clean the rollers visible in the printer with

a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. The cloth should be damp, but

not soaking wet. Use your finger to turn the rollers toward the printer. Make sure you

remove any buildup or debris from the entire surface of the roller.

On the duplexer, push in the buttons on the rear cover and lower the cover.

Clean the surface of the rollers of the duplexer the same way you cleaned the rollers inside

the printer. Allow the rollers of the duplexer to dry for

10 to 15 minutes. Reinsert the duplexer back into the printer.

Plug the power cord back in. Go to the front of the printer.

Press the Power button to turn the printer on.

Try to print a self-test page again. On the printer control panel, touch the Setup

button which looks like a wrench. Touch Print Report from the menu.

If the test page prints successfully, the issue is resolved. If the test page does not

print, go on to the next step. Sometimes the issue can be resolved by resetting

the printer. First remove all the paper in the input tray.

Make sure that the printer is on, if it is not on, press the Power button.

Go to the back of the printer. Without turning the printer off, disconnect

the power cord. Pull the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait 15 seconds. It is important to wait the full 15 seconds to allow time for all power

to drain from the printer. Reinsert the power cord into the wall outlet.

And then, plug the power cord back into the printer.

Return to the front of the printer. If the printer does not turn on by itself,

press the Power button to turn it on. Load paper into the input tray and adjust

the guides so theyre snug against the stack. Try to print a self-test page again.

On the printer control panel, touch the Setup button which looks like a wrench.

Touch Print Report from the menu. Touch Self-Test Report from the menu to print

the self test report. If the test page prints successfully, the

issue is resolved. If the test page does not print, go on to the next step.
