Understanding the CAASPP Individual Student Score Report.

This video will help you and your child learn about the 201617 Student Score Report of

year-end standardized test results.

Districts will receive a Student Score Report for each student.

These reports will be distributed to parents.

There are two pages to each student's report.

The first page shows both the overall performance level results and detailed information on

the Smarter Balanced tests in English language arts/literacy and mathematics.

The second page contains information about score ranges, and information about the California

Science Test (CAST) pilot if your child is in grades

5, 8, or high school.

Let's look at the first page of Matthew's Student

Score Report.

The gold bands running across the page show Matthew's overall scores for English language

arts/literacy and mathematics.

The right side of the gold band offers a quick comparison to the prior years score and

achievement level to see if Matthews score and achievement level improved for this year.

For an 11th grade student, the gold bands will report the student's Early Assessment

Program status, as well as their overall score.

The Early Assessment Program status describes how the achievement levels from this assessment

relate to the student's level of readiness for college-level English and mathematics

courses.

Overall progress for grade 11 students is listed within the gold bands.

Now let us look at the bar graphs and how the student scores are represented.

The bar graphs report Matthews scores for his current grade (5) assessment, and scores

for two prior yearsgrades 3 and 4.

For example, Matthews English language arts/literacy score was 2408 (Level 2) in

grade 3, 2467 (Level 2) in grade 4, and is now 2503 (Level 3) in grade 5.

Students in grade 3 will have only 1 set of scores and students in grade 4 will only have

two sets of scores because testing is not given in the second grade.

Grade 11 students will also have only one score reported.

Each student's score will fall into an achievement level that helps us understand where the student

is on the path to learning skills needed for college and career.

Standard Not Met or Level 1 Standard Nearly Met or Level 2

Standard Met or Level 3 Standard Exceeded or Level 4

While achievement numbers vary between grade levels, the bar graphs allow Matthew's parents

and teachers to know whether he is meeting, not meeting, or exceeding grade level standards,

and where he falls within the band.

The right hand side of the first page shows how Matthew's overall scores are broken down

across the content areas.

The English language arts/literacy overall score breaks down into the four content areas

of "Reading," "Writing," "Listening," and "Research/Inquiry."

The Mathematics overall score breaks down into the three content areas of "Concepts

and Procedures," "Problem Solving and Modeling & Data Analysis," and "Communicating

Reasoning."

These areas are based on the standards, which describe what students should know and be

able to do.

Below that is Matthews score history which shows his achievement level and overall

score compared to the state average for the current year, and two prior years.

Parents and teachers can use these results to identify where students are performing

particularly well, or what they are struggling with and need help to improve.

Now, let's look at the second page of the score report.

This section shows Matthew's student number, date of birth, grade, test date, and the name

of his school and district.

To the right of that information is a brief message from the State Superintendent of Public

Instruction, explaining California's assessments, and what they mean for your child.

The center of the second page provides more information about the tests and the score

ranges, showing which scores are needed to fall into each achievement level.

Below you will find links to additional resources, including the test score guide Web site, where

you can learn more about your childs score report.

For grade five, eight and some grade 11 students, the bottom of the second page of the report

will include information about the California Science Test (CAST) pilot.

If a grade 10 or 12 student participated in the California Science Test pilot this year,

a separate report will be distributed to parents.
