ROSS: >> WE WILL NOT APPROACH SOMEONE JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE A SUSPICION THAT THEY ARE UNDOCUMENTED.

ROSS: LOCAL LEADERS INSIST JACKSON IS NOT A SANCTUARY CITY.

>> HERE IN JACKSON, WE DONT HAVE A SANCTUARY ORDINANCE.

ROSS: BUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DISAGREES.

AND THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FIRST PUT THE CITY ON NOTICE LATE LAST YEAR.

THEY SENT JACKSONS MAYOR A LETTER DEMANDING TO KNOW IF THE CAPITAL CITY IS UNLAWFULLY RESTRICTING JPD OFFICERS FROM HELPING FEDERAL IMMIGRATION AGENTS ROUND UP SUSPECTED

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS >> THEY ARE IGNORANT OF THE DEPARTMENT -- THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE IS IGNORANT OF WHAT THE ORDINANCE IS ALL ABOUT.

ROSS: BILL CHANDLER WITH THE MISSISSIPPI IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS ALLIANCE BELIEVES JACKSON WAS TARGETED BECAUSE OF ITS 2010 CITY COUNCIL-APPROVED ORDINANCE.

THAT LOCAL LAW PROHIBITS POLICE FROM ASKING DRIVERS IN TRAFFIC STOPS ABOUT THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS.

IT WAS AN ORDNANCE THAT WAS PASSED IN RESPONSE TO RACIAL PROFILING BY VARIOUS MUNICIPAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.

MY HOPE IS THAT THE MAYOR AND THE OTHER CITY LEADERS WILL COME TO SEE THAT OPERATING AS A CENTURY CITY IS JUST NOT A GOOD POLICY.

IT IS PARTICULARLY NOT A GOOD POLICY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING IN NEIGHBORHOODS THAT STRUGGLE WITH CRIME.

ROSS: WHILE SOME OTHER SO-CALLED SANCTUARY CITIES FLATLY BAR POLICE FROM WORKING WITH ICE AGENTS, MAYOR CHOKWE ANTAR LUMUMBA SAYS JACKSON POLICE WILL ASSIST THOSE OFFICERS IF THEYRE

ASKED TO HELP.

STILL THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TOLD THE CITY IF THEY DONT SHOW PROOF OF COMPLIANCE, IT COULD HAVE TO RETURN A $1.8 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANT.

>> THAT MONEY IS ON THE LINE IF THEY ARE OPERATING AS A SANCTUARY THE.

IF JACKSON DOES NOT WANT TO ENFORCE IMMIGRATION LAW, THEY SHOULD LOSE THAT MONEY.

>> THE CITIES ARE NOT COOPERATING WITH ICE AND WHERE JACKSON HAS BEEN ASKED, IM SURE THAT THEY HAVE.
