Woudagemaal, the largest working steam pumping station in the world

ir. D.F. Wood pumping station. Unesco World Heritage, Magisterial experience of steam, architecture and water

Unique steam pumping station The forest pumping station in Lemmer is the largest steam pumping station in the world that is still operational. Since 1920, the pumping station has been turned on at high water levels to discharge the excess water from the Frisian basin.

Although a more modern pumping station has been running in Stavoren since 1966, the Woudagemaal still has a practical function in Frisian water management.

The architecturally and historically unique Woudagemaal has been a protected monument since 1977. In 1998 it was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
