‘Obligated’ and ‘Obliged’ both come from the same root word “obligare” in Latin, which means to bind or to tie. Over time, each word has taken on its own specific meaning and use.
Obligated: This word is often used when there is a rule, law, or promise that makes you do something. You have no choice. For example, you are “obligated” to pay taxes.
Obliged: This word is used more for feelings and emotions. If you feel you should do something to be kind or helpful, you are “obliged” to do it. For example, someone helps you, so you feel “obliged” to help them back.
