Every thing 和 Everything的区别

今天，我想谈一谈同一个词的两种不同拼法。Everything与Every thing。除了一个空格外，这两者之间有什么区别吗？

他们与每个人/每一个人都相似，其中有明显的含义差异？

Everything和Every thing之间的区别是什么？

这两种拼法在意义上似乎没有大的区别；单字Everything现在是默认的、更常见的拼法。

有人说，Every thing表明事物是单个项目或单位，而Everything表明所有项目是一个集体单位。我试着用下面的例子来说明这一点。

* Every thing on this menu is bad for you.
* Everything on this menu is bad for you.

区别在于重点不同，一个侧重于个别项目，另一个侧重于所有项目作为一个单位。

也就是说，单字Everything已经成为普遍现象，因为Everything很少被拼成两个字。

上图是过去200年里书籍中Every thing与Everything的对比图。在19世纪中期的某个时候，Every thing开始被写成一个词。这在美国英语和英国英语中是一致的。

何时使用Everything？

Everything是什么意思？Everything（一个词）是默认拼写。它的定义是：所有的东西；一组或一类的所有东西；所有重要的东西；最重要的事实或考虑。

* Everything in this house will need to be replaced.

* In business, location is everything.

何时使用Every thing？

现在很少看到Everything写成两个字。然而，在某些情况下，需要使用两个字的Every thing，那就是在两个字之间放置一个额外的形容词。

* He corrects every little thing that you say.
* Every single thing she touches is a success.

这在讲话中很常见，但在写作中却很少见，特别是任何形式的正式写作。

Everything使用单数动词

值得注意的是，虽然Everything指的是一组或一类中的所有事物，但它需要一个单数动词。

* The houses were damaged after the tornado, but everyone was all right. (正确)
* The houses were damaged after the tornado, but everyone were all right. (错误)
