The Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) is a separatist movement based in northern Malaysia and operating in southern Thailand. The original BRN was established in 1963 as a splinter group of Barisan Nasional Pembe-Basan Pattani (BNPP). It was a leftist organisation advocating Islamic socialism and to fight for an independant Pattani state, but later split in the 1980s into three political factions: “BRN-Congress (BRN-K)”, “BRN-Coordinate (BRN-C)” and “BRN-Ulema”. Today, “Congress” and “Ulema” are more or less defunct and BRN “Coordinate” is the main group active on the ground in the south. On Feb 28, 2013, the government of Thailand signed an agreement with BRN that reaffirmed commitments on both sides towards dialogues and peace coordination. The ideology of BRN-C BRN, is Salafism.
