Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF); also designated fibroblast growth factor-7 (FGF-7) and similar to FGF-10, is a mitogen produced primarily by fibroblasts and is a potent growth factor for alveolar and bronchial epithelial cells. The KGFR dominant negative mice have essentially no lungs, whereas the lungs of KGF knockout mice are relatively normal. These observations have been interpreted as indicating that FGF-10, not FGF-7, is required for fetal lung development and that FGF-10 can replace FGF-7 in the FGF-7 null animal. KGF has the potential as an important treatment for acute lung injury, and studies on the mechanism of how KGF increases differentiation in vitro may provide new therapeutic targets for the treatment of many lung diseases.

Over a century, the town has been known for gold mining. The mine closed on 28 February 2001 due to a fall in gold prices, despite gold still being present there. One of India’s first power-generation units was built in 1889 to support mining operations. The mine complex hosted some particle physics experiments between the 1960s and 1992.

Economic activities centred on the goldfields, which were the southern portion of a gold-bearing region that extends for 40 miles (65 km). Within three years, four main veins (Champion, Oorgaum, Nundydorog, and Mysore) were opened. Champion, the deepest, reached some 10,500 feet (3,200 metres) below sea level.

Although the annual production in some years was more than 95 percent of India’s gold output, the mines declined and were nationalized in 1956 to prevent closure. The mines finally closed in 2001 despite the protests of the miners and others who depended on the mines for their livelihoods. Many people left the mining town established there or commuted to Bengaluru, 60 miles (100 km) away, for work.
