The National Research Council (NRC) is the operating arm of the United States National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and is overseen by a governing board that consists councilors from each of the three Academies. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are private, nonprofit institutions that provide expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation and world. Their work helps shape sound policies, inform public opinion, and advance the pursuit of science, engineering, and medicine.

The National Research Council was organized by the National Academy of Sciences in 1916 to associate the broad community of science and technology with the Academy’s purposes of further knowledge and advising the federal government. NRC stands for noise reduction coefficient and is the standard rating for how well a material absorbs sound. Different materials have different NRC ratings that range from 0.00-1.00.

Typically, the NRC rating of a material is viewed as a percentage. For example, an NRC rating of .75 means 75% of the sound energy coming in contact with that specific material is absorbed. Simply put, the sound is not reflected back into the room to create noise. A material with an NRC of 0.75 would also be considered 25% reflective.

1. Although NRC is often thought of as a figure used for rating acoustic products, in reality, every material around us has an impact on acoustics and can be tested for a rating.
2. The NRC figure ranges from 0.00—perfectly reflective—to 1.00—perfectly absorptive. NRC is always expressed as a decimal that is rounded to the nearest 0.05. For example, an unpainted brick that absorbs very little sound may have a rating of .05 while 1-inch-thick cork wall tiles may be extremely absorptive, with a rating of .70.

Materials with a rating of .75 or higher are generally considered to be highly absorptive and will bring about the best results; this includes cork, fiberglass, stone wool and sprayed cellulose fibers.

Everyday carpeting and drapes are often thought to be good for sound absorption, but, surprisingly enough, most have a rating of .35 or less! Typically, these materials absorb high frequencies, leaving middle and low frequencies unaffected.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is an exercise by the Indian government to recognise and expel illegal immigrants pursuant to Section 14A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 read with the Foreigners Act, 1946. The government implemented the NRC in the north-eastern state of Assam, bordering Bangladesh. The recently-published UN World Migration Report 2020 has identified this border as one of the most vulnerable migrant corridors in Asia, given the historical fluidity of its boundaries. In Assam, international borders are young and divide ethnically similar societies owing to the long history of territory exchange agreements between India and Bangladesh and the legal migration of refugees in the aftermath of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Therefore, the porosity of established migrant categories must be acknowledged and preserved by the State. Instead, in 2018, the government screened 32.9 million people and 65 million documents, costing the taxpayer $178 million and labeled 40,70,707 people as illegal residents. In 2019, the government revised and released the final list of the NRC, excluding nearly 2 million people – approximately 6% of Assam’s population – effectively rendering them stateless.

According to Section 2 of the Foreigners Act: “A foreigner means a person who is not a citizen of India”. And according to Section 9, the burden of proof lies with the person suspected to be a foreigner, to provide documentary evidence proving their citizenship. Those excluded must appeal to the Foreigners Tribunals, implying that the State already treats them as non-citizens. “Foreigners” are required to prove their citizenship by providing legacy documents proving permanent Indian residency, failing which they will be stateless.

NRC means the National Register of Citizens. NRC is a list of Assam’s residents – prepared to identify bonafide residents and deport illegal migrants in the northeastern state bordering Bangladesh. So far, this has been a state-specific exercise to keep its ethnic uniqueness unaltered.But ever since its implementation, there has been a growing demand for its nationwide implementation. Many top BJP leaders, including home minister Amit Shah have proposed that the NRC in Assam be implemented across India. It effectively suggests to bring a legislation that will enable the government to identify infiltrators who have been living in India illegally, detain them and finally deport them where they came from

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was created as an independent agency by Congress in 1974 to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials for beneficial civilian purposes while protecting people and the environment. The NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine, through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements.

The Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation has overall responsibility for NRC’s reactor program. NRC’s regional offices implement this program in the states for which they are responsible (Region I covers the Northeast ; Region II covers the Southeast ; Region III covers the Midwest ; and Region IV covers the West and the Southwest ). Reactor regulation is also supported by a Nuclear Reactor Safety Research program and by independent advice from the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards.
