Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is a modality of imaging technology which helps in image transmission from the site of image acquisition to multiple physically-disparate locations. This technology not only is economical (film-less department), but also convenient to access multiple modalities (radiographs, CT, MR, ultrasound etc.) simultaneously at multiple locations within hospitals or across the globe.

Basic structure

PACS is usually an integration of:

1. input from digital or digitized analog devices, which may be any radiological modality e.g. x-ray, CT, MRI or ultrasound
2. image acquisition device
3. image storage device/server for short or long term storage of data
4. transmission network: local or web-based
5. display stations: imaging workstation and user interface
6. camera: to convert into hard-copy images on need basis
7. integration with radiology information system (RIS) and hospital information system (HIS)

The Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme (PACS) is a scheme developed in 1970 by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) for classifying scientific literature using a hierarchical set of codes. PACS has been used by over 160 international journals, including the Physical Review series since 1975. Since 2016, American Physical Society introduced the PhySH (Physics Subject Headings) system instead of PACS.

The Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) programme was an initiative of the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). Its aim was to reduce the welfare gap between socially excluded groups and the rest of the population by helping socially excluded communities to claim their rights and entitlements more effectively.

DFID appointed the IFIRST consortium as the management consultant for the PACS programme. ​PACS also had a National Advisory Board to oversee the project’s implementation.

Launched in April 2009, the seven-year programme ended in March 2016.

From 2009-2016, the Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) programme worked in 90 districts, 517 blocks and 22,404 villages across seven Indian States – Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal – to help socially excluded communities to claim their rights and entitlements more effectively. Since April 2016, PACS has consolidated its work in 5  of these states – Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.

From 2009-2016, the Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) programme worked in seven of India’s poorest States to help socially excluded communities to claim their rights and entitlements more effectively. In total, PACS worked with 225 Civil Society Organisation (CSO) partners, covering 90 districts, 517 blocks, 22,404 villages and 23,206 Community Based Organisations (CBOs).

Partial Anterior Circulation Stroke Syndrome (PACS) refers to the symptoms of a patient who clinically appears to have suffered from a partial anterior circulation infarct, but who has not yet had any diagnostic imaging to confirm the diagnosis.

A partial anterior circulation stroke (PACS) is a less severe form of TACS, in which only part of the anterior circulation has been compromised.

Two of the following need to be present for a diagnosis of a PACS:

• Unilateral weakness (and/or sensory deficit) of the face, arm and leg
• Homonymous hemianopia
• Higher cerebral dysfunction (dysphasia, visuospatial disorder)

A Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) is a basic unit and smallest co-operative credit institutions in India.^[1] It works on the grassroots level (gram panchayat and village level).

Primary Agricultural Credit Societies  (PACS) occupy a predominant position in the co-operative credit structure and form its base. A PACS is organized at the grass roots level of a village or a group of small villages. It is this basic unit which deals directly with the rural (agricultural) borrowers, gives those loans and collects repayments of loans given. It serves as the final link between the ultimate borrowers on the one hand and the higher financing agencies, namely the SCBS, and the RBI/NABARD on the other hand.

As such, the health and strength of the co-operative credit movement depends crucially upon the health and strength of these societies. But, despite much official effort and support, and numerical expansion of the PACS in membership, working capital, loans given and other activities, their health and working leave much to be desired.
