.pfa is an ASCII version of Printer Font Binary (PFB).
Printer Font ASCII (PFA) is a pure ASCII version of a Type 1 font program, containing in particular a font’s glyph data. It is pure PostScript code without any sort of wrapper, and can be copied in full into a PS file to define the font to the PS interpreter. PFA is the preferred format for Type 1 fonts used in UNIX environments, and usually carries a “.PFA” file name extension.
A file with .pfa extension is a Printer Font ASCII version of Adobe’s Type 1 font and contains font’s glyph data. The file is in human readable format and can be opened in any text editor. PostScript interpreter can use this type of font as a whole for its working. Printer Font Binary (PFB) version of Adobe’s Type 1 font contains the same information. However, unline PFA, it is in binary file format and is not human readable. PFA files can be incorporated into the system by copying into the system’s Fonts folder.
