The Full Form of SPICMACAY is Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth.
The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) is a nonpolitical, voluntary youth movement which promotes intangible aspects of Indian cultural heritage by promoting Indian classical music, classical dance, folk music, yoga, meditation, crafts, and other aspects of Indian culture. The organization seeks to foster traditional Indian values and to generate awareness of the cultural traditions and heritage of India. In order to achieve its goals, SPICMACAY organizes concerts, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, informal discussions, and talks by eminent scholars and thinkers.
SPICMACAY was started in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Seth who recognized a need to educate the youth of India about their cultural heritage. The organization has grown over the years to over 300 chapters around the world.
SPICMACAY at UVA, established in 1990, is one of only 10 chapters in the United States. In the past 25 years, the chapter has organized scores of events featuring leading artists all of whom are preeminent in their fields. SPICMACAY at UVA also promotes talented students and community members by providing a platform for artists to present their work.The organization has flourished over the years through the service of dedicated student volunteers, staff, faculty, and generous contributions and support from the Charlottesville community. Events bring hundreds of attendees from all walks of life together to experience the beauty and richness of Indian art forms.
