What is the meaning of [Misfortunes never come singly]

One misfortunes is generally followed closely by another. As Robert Herrick
wrote in his poem _Sorrows Succeed_ :

> When one is past, another care we have;
> Thus woe succeeds a woe, as wave a wave.

Or, in the more modern phrase, ‘Life is just one damned thing after another,’
which gave John Masefield the title for his book _Odtaa_.
