Anglia Ruskin University (APU) is a public university located in East Anglia, United Kingdom. They story starts in 1858, when the art critic, patron and philanthropist John Ruskin opened Cambridge School of Art. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University, shortened to ARU, and it’s still at the heart of our modern-day campus in Cambridge.

As well as Cambridge, we have campuses in Chelmsford, London and Peterborough. Our Chelmsford campus was originally in the city centre but moved to a new, purpose-built site in 1992. Since its founding, the Political Union has sought to fight the political apathy that plagues many other colleges by engaging members of the Amherst College campus in productive conversations relating to salient and pressing political issues.

The APU has grown substantially over the year. It is now an umbrella organization with three main components. The first facet of the APU is our weekly meetings held weekly in the McCaffrey Room located within the Keefe Campus Center. Next, the APU has a prominent speaker series in which politicians, legal scholars, political theorists, and others are invited to speak on Amherst’s campus. Past guests have included: Eleanor Roosevelt, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz, former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, Georgetown Law Professor Lawrence Lessig, Guatemalan Health Minister Lucrecia Hernández Mack, and many more. Our events are free and are open to all Amherst College students. Finally, the APU’s third component is a brand new political publication.
