What does ‘Jonesing’ mean?

have strong desire or craving for something

American slang

E.g., Let’s make a little break, I’m jonesing for that sandwich with grilled ham.

Jonesing origin

When I saw this word first, I thought it had been connected to some Susan’s craving for a handsome man by the name John. To my great surprise, jonesing derived from the heroin addiction. In the late 60s, it was applied to the strong feeling of lasting the drug.

The history of American, as well as British slang examples, can be short since it all depends on how a specific term has been assimilated into the society. In this case, the term jonesing has survived through many changes until it acquired its current meaning.
