Let it wag, let it slide, let it go, let it slip, let it sink, let it pass.
The last word varies, but the meaning is always the same : ‘Let the world do
what it likes. I regard the course of events with complete unconcern. It
matters nothing to me what it does as long as it leaves me alone.’ A
sixteenth-century philosopher decided to ‘let the world wag and take mine ease
in mine inn’.
