It is bound by Thailand to the northwest and west, Laos to the north and northeast, Vietnam to the east and southeast and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. About 75% of central Cambodia is a level basin that is bordered by the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap lake. Behind and to the southwest of the basin the Cardamom and Dangrek Ranges are located, with the latter a prominent escarpment that runs along the Thai border to the north. The coastline has a small plain fronted by numerous offshore islands. Major Cities (pop. est.); Phnom Penh 564,000, Batdambang 45,000, Kampong Cham 33,000, Pursat 16,000 (1987). It is bound by China to the north and northeast, Laos to the east, Thailand to the east and southeast, India to the northwest, Bangladesh to the west and the Andaman Sea to the south. The country can be divided into four topographical zones. (1.) The Eastern Shan Plateau which is a highland region that merges with the Dawna and Tenasserim Yoma Ranges. (2.) The central belt zone which covers the valleys of the Irrawaddy, Chindwin and Sittang Rivers as well as a mountainous region in the north and a low lying delta to the south. (3.) The western mountain zone, also known as the Arakan Mountains, which is a series of ridges that start in the northern mountain area and extend to the southwestern corner. (4.) The Arakan coastal zone which is a narrow alluvial strip lying between the Arakan Mountains and the Bay of Bengal. The other main river is the Salween.  Thailand is located in the center of mainland South East Asia. It is bound by the Andaman Sea to the west, Myanmar to the west and northwest, Laos to the east and northeast, Cambodia to the east as well as Malaysia and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. The country is divided into five topographical regions. (1.) The southeast coast which has a lush and fertile plain. (2.) The northeastern Khorat Plateau region which accounts for around 33% of the land area and is ringed by the Phanom Dongrak Mountain Range and Phetchabun Mountains. (3.) A central lowland which is dominated by the Chao Phraya River and includes the central valley that comprises 22% of the land area. (4.) The northern and western mountain regions which are a series of parallel mountain ranges separated by steep and narrow valleys. (5.) The southern peninsula region which is divided by a series of north to south ridges which form a narrow swampy indented western coastal plain and a broad smooth eastern coastal plain. Major Cities (pop. est.); Bangkok 5,620,600, Nonthaburi 264,200, Nakhon Ratchasima 202,500, Chiang Mai 161,500 (1991). Land Use; forested 26%, pastures 2%, agricultural-cultivated 41%, other 31% (1993).

Vietnam is located in South East Asia. It is bound by the South China Sea to the east, Laos and Cambodia to the west and China to the north. The country can be divided into three regions, North Vietnam, Central Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam is mountainous especially in the north and northwestern sections while the lowlands consist of the Red River Delta and the coastal plains. Central Vietnam is divided into a narrow coastal strip, a broad plateau and the Annamite Mountain Chain which separates the plateau from the coastal lowlands. The lower one third of South Vietnam including the Mekong River System is a low and marshy flat land while further north and east, upland forests as well as rugged terrain dominate. The principal river systems are the Red in the north and the Mekong in the south and the country has three large lakes the Ba-Be, HoTay and Hoan-Kiem. Major Cities (pop. est.); Ho Chi Minh City 4,322,000, Hanoi 2,155,000 (1993). Land Use; forested 30%, pastures 1%, agricultural-cultivated 21%, other 48% (1993).
