The Full Form of NOPE is National Organization of Peer Educators.
The National Organization of Peer Educators (NOPE) is one of the fastest growing organizations providing HIV and AIDS
prevention services in Kenya. The organization has been largely supported by USAID and Family Health International in
institutional development.
The idea of NOPE came in the year 2000 as a replication of a peer educators’ association that was then being implemented in Tamil
Nadu, India. The association was aimed at lobbying the government to provide more funds for their work. NOPE’s purpose would
however not be to lobby government but to spread the FHI/IMPACT peer education methodology to as many groups as possible for
HIV/AIDS behavior change.
By the end of 2000, NOPE had been formed and in April 2001 it launched its Coast Chapter. This was soon followed by launches in
the Western and Rift Valley regions. In December 2001, NOPE was officially registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO).
To ensure its sustainability NOPE has developed products and services through which it generates funds that are used to support
some of its programs. It does not exclusively depend on donor funds. The services include training of trainers and peer educators,
management sensitization, policy development, and research, monitoring and evaluation. FHI has played a major role in supporting
NOPE to develop effective program and financial management systems.
NOPE’s goal is to institutionalize peer-centred health and social programs in workplaces, NGOs and community-based
organizations. The objectives include increasing knowledge about responsible sexuality and encourage positive attitudes among
youth, men and women in the community providing technical assistance to organizations to develop and implement comprehensive
HIV and AIDS programs.
