Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a strong, tough, waxy, nonflammable synthetic resin produced by the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene. The common brand names for PTFE are Teflon, Fluon, Hostaflon and Polyflon. PTFE is hydrophobic (rejects water), highly resistant against chemicals, corrosion, and oxidation and has extremely low coefficient of friction. PTFE is widely used as a nonstick coating in cookware and in many construction applications include usage in hydraulic machinery, plumber’s joint tape etc.
