The Royal Literary Fund is a benevolent fund set up to help published British writers in financial difficulties. It was founded in 1790 by Reverend David Williams, who was inspired to set up the Fund by the death in debtors’ prison of a translator of Plato’s dialogues, Floyer Sydenham.

The RLF helps authors across the literary spectrum: novelists, poet and playwrights; writers of short stories and writers for children; crime writers, science writers, biographers… The circumstances of those we help vary greatly. You can find out some of their stories here.
