With the world undergoing the most rapid wave of urbanization, India is likely to see 600 million urban citizens by
2031. The High Empowered Committee report on Urban Infrastructure and Services concludes that if sustainable
urbanization is not managed effectively, it could severely impede the growth trajectory of India.
Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was launched in December 2005 with an investment of Rs.1,
00,000 crore for a period of seven years beginning 2005-06 to bridge the resource gap that cities and small towns
transitioning to cities are facing.
Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT), a component of JNNURM aims
to improve urban infrastructure in towns and cities via better planning, access to funding and by capacity building in
urban local bodies. UIDSSMT subsumed the existing schemes of Integrated Development of Small and Medium
Towns (IDSMT) and Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme (AUWSP).
